This project is an addition to an existing electricity power station set against the mountainous backdrop of Monte Amiata in central Italy. The brief was to conceal the structure within an artificial landscape. Instead, Stefani Boeri has created a distinctive piece of architectural infrastructure that engages with its natural surroundings. The building nestles within a Cor-ten steel skin that unifies a fragmented set of parts and gives them a sculptural quality. The elements of the power station are organized within two volumes, one a solid block and the other a sloping roof made of 17 wrapping ribs. The pitch of the roof appears to continue the slope of the mountain, and links the two plant buildings. The power station transforms itself from object during the day to lighthouse at night, and its strong identity has earned it the local nickname of dinosaur‘. It is already a landmark, and the mayors of surrounding villages have asked for it to remain lit up throughout the night, and to become a visitor attraction in the area.
