The platform roof for the new central bus terminal of the public urban transport system is located on the city square of the Piazzale ex-scuole, The project is composed of a central, 7-metre-high (23-foot) nave with two 5-metre-high (16-foot) side aisles, formed by two opposing structures, which creates a new urban space, offering along the Corso Pestalozzi a protective platform roof for the bus stop and on the south front, a connection with the parking area for cars, bikes and scooters. The bearing structure is constructed from a steel frame with a double beam -supported by only four columns jutting as a roof on each front at heights of 5 and 7 metres (16 and 23 feet). The structure is covered with a translucent material (polycarbonate panels) and offers an opaque surface allowing a filtered light. The effect of the translucent surface characterises this central bus station, whether offering wide, bright and weather-protected spaces during the day, or at night, transmitting a shining effect of white and coloured light sources, which are set within the steel structure. The new frame begins at 2.5 metres (8 feet) from ground level and therefore provides total transparency in the walking and crossing area. Small shop units with different functions will be set on the front side facing the parking lot, redefining the square area and entertaining this new urban front. The two central units will accommodate public telephone booths and a technical plant.
