This scheme comprises the conversion and extension of a 1952-built rum and banana warehouse on Canary Wharf, in the heart of London‘s docklands. The existing warehouse was a large three-storey brick and concrete frame building of rugged simplicity, inside which were to be inserted two television studios designed to very high technical specifications, plus ancillary production, office and workshop accommodation. A new mezzanine floor was added along the north entrance frontage to provide additional area for performers, dressing-rooms, and related facilities. At ground level a large reception area constitutes the main focus of the building, leading to the main stair and lift, the studios and production areas, and the public client rooms. Externally, six substantial new elements were added to the entrance elevation, both to provide additional accommodation and to give the building a new identity. These are closely related in appearance and proportionate in scale to the massive bulk of the existing warehouse.
